Mr. Vittal’s session was aptly named as ‘The choices we make’ where he included a number of scenarios which a manager is very likely to face in the corporate battlefield and where making the right choices were of the essence. Through these scenarios, he went about explaining to the students the repercussions that their actions could have. One of the scenarios was where an employee faced a dilemma over whether to quit or switch reporting or work harder or realign or take the decision to quit in case some difference of opinions emerges in the office and is a tough one to deal with. Similarly, through another brilliant scenario, the speaker emphasised the need to make sound judgments in accepting or rejecting various roles and responsibilities in the industry.
The ideal time to quit a company and move on, and the ideal time to join any company are two of the hardest calls that any manager would ever have to make once he makes the plunge into the deep ocean that the corporate world is akin to. Here, Mr. Vittal made sure that the students of VGSoM stand better prepared than their counterparts with a set of great illustrations and expositions. With him being associated with two of the biggest names in India’s startup revolution - Flipkart and ShopClues, he offered a slew of clues on how to tackle the unique problems that the new-age firms of the present day are faced with. In the same breath, he also spoke of the differences that one can expect to find between long-established enterprises and the startups of this decade. The esteemed guest spoke on how HR problems of the current times may not only be necessarily a manifestation of faulty HR policies and hence how essential it was for a company to view them as business problems without looking at them only through the lens of HRM. Through a very interesting activity which was as simple as making a headcount albeit with a few constraints, Mr. Vittal went on to highlight the significance of efficiently listening, questioning, leading, and acting as a team.
Thus to sum it up, Mr. Babu Vittal enriched each and every one in attendance with an exceptionally interactive session. The learnings gained from which are sure to run through the veins of our budding managers and will possibly come to their aid throughout their careers. We thank Mr. Vittal for flying all the way down to IIT Kharagpur to enlighten us all and wish to attend many such sessions from him in the days and years to come.
